Google's Monopoly Ruling: A Major Legal Blow

  • In a landmark decision, a federal court has ruled that Google maintains an illegal monopoly in the search engine market.

  • Essentially, the DOJ accused Google of violating antitrust laws by maintaining its grip on search engine access (e.g. via its $20b deal with Apple to remain the default search engine on Apple devices). The court largely agreed with this assessment.

  • This ruling could lead to significant regulatory changes and may force Google to alter its business practices, potentially opening the door for increased competition. The firm plans to appeal the decision.
